Over the past several months, the Board of Directors has conducted a thoughtful and thorough search for Farm Fresh Rhode Island’s next leader. Today, we are excited to share that Janet Coit will be the organization’s new Executive Director.
“Throughout this process, we were looking for a leader who understands Rhode Island, can navigate complex systems, and shares Farm Fresh Rhode Island’s deep commitment to strengthening our local food system. Janet brings all of these qualities along with decades of leadership experience and strong relationships across the state. The board is confident she will lead the Farm Fresh team and build on the organization’s impact across Rhode Island and the region,” said Virginia Branch and Kristine Merz, Co-Chairs of the Executive Director Search Committee.
Janet’s experience includes serving for over a decade as Director of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM), where she oversaw agriculture, fisheries, and the state park system. At RIDEM, she focused on growing local food systems and supporting Rhode Island’s seafood sector, as well as reducing pollution and conserving natural habitats.
Most recently, Janet was Director of NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service, the federal agency responsible for stewardship of U.S. living marine resources. Serving at NOAA from 2021 to January 2025, Janet worked closely with states, tribes and partners, leading the nation’s efforts to ensure sustainable management of our fisheries and restore coastal and marine habitats. At NOAA, Janet launched the first-ever National Seafood Strategy, establishing strategies to support the U.S. seafood economy.
Earlier in her life, Janet worked at The Nature Conservancy and for several U.S. Senators, building a career focused on conservation, public service, and strengthening community support systems.
Janet shared, “It’s exciting to join Farm Fresh RI, a leader in Rhode Island and in local food systems work throughout the region. I have long admired their work to support farmers, fishers and food businesses and improve access to fresh local food. I am thrilled for the opportunity to lead Farm Fresh, work with the amazing staff and partners, and continue expanding their impact for the benefit of all Rhode Islanders.”
Janet will officially step into her role on April 13, as Jesse Rye, the current Executive Director, closes out his successful 14-year tenure at the organization.
We will be sharing more throughout this time of transition about an opportunity to celebrate Jesse’s contributions and welcome Janet to Farm Fresh RI. In the meantime, we are hard at work supporting the growth of our local food system and preparing for the busy season ahead.
