Local seafood is getting its moment! A recent Providence Journal story highlights Farm Fresh RI’s efforts to bring more locally caught fish into schools—featuring monkfish sliders as a standout success.
This work is part of a broader effort with the Commercial Fisheries Center of RI, Tony’s Seafood, and Eating with the Ecosystem to connect students with fresh, local seafood while supporting Rhode Island’s fishing economy. Monkfish, often overlooked for its appearance, is known for its sweet, lobster-like flavor.
With the help of our partners, we’re bringing locally caught monkfish sliders to 26 school districts across RI.The sliders were a hit during taste tests, with 94% of students giving them a thumbs up. Students will also learn about the journey from sea to school, connecting lunch to our fishing community and local food system.
We’re proud to be part of the partnerships helping make this possible, building stronger connections between local fishers, schools, and communities!
