October is “Leaf Awareness Month!” Didn’t know it was leaf awareness month? Just wait, then! As the leaves turn colors, and start falling, you will be aware of the change. With the ground covered in dry, crunchy leaves, you may wonder what happens to all those piles that accumulate in leaf bags, placed curbside. Well, they go somewhere, but they don’t come back. The majority wind up at the state landfill, where they are composted, and then used to stabilize the trash pile. This process is wasteful and has no benefit to our environment.
But leaves don’t have to exit your yard! Leaves are nature’s way of recycling nutrients! Those leaves are better utilized right where they fall to help build new soil! Don’t have room? Learn how to manage your leaves and compost successfully with local Community Composter, Michael Bradlee, from Earth Appliance Organics and the Community Compost Depot at Frey Gardens. Along with a crew of composting enthusiasts, Mr. Bradlee will demonstrate how to tame your pile of leaves, and compost — even in the smallest of spaces! This demonstration will be like no other. Join us at the Armory Farmer’s Market, where we declare October to be Leaf-tober.
