AmeriCorps Week Spotlight: Shannon Hickey

March 14, 2022

Happy AmeriCorps Week 2022! We can’t thank our tremendously dedicated AmeriCorps members enough. They are absolutely vital to building capacity for our programs and services — and in growing the local food system for our region!

This week we will be spotlighting each of our active AmeriCorps members. Meet Shannon Hickey, Communications & Development AmeriCorps VISTA Member for Hopes Harvest RI.

What made you want to work at Hope’s Harvest? I joined Hope’s Harvest with intentions to learn as much as possible about local food systems and food equity. I received my undergraduate degree in Marketing and Psychology from Bryant University, and went on to further my project management and marketing skills while working with an electrical engineering company. Eager for change and fulfillment, I was excited to repurpose my skill set to make a meaningful impact on the community alongside the Hope’s Harvest team.

What television or book series are you into right now? I will never not be obsessed with Harry Potter and Outlander 🙂

What’s your favorite RI tradition? I love it all… lobster rolls, clam cakes and chowder, coffee milk! Not born here, but a Rhode Islander at heart.

What drew you to serving as an AmeriCorps member? After a couple stagnant years at my previous job, I was ready to experience a more hands-on approach for work that directly helped those in need.

What is your favorite aspect of serving as an AmeriCorps member at Hope’s Harvest? It’s a tie between getting to harvest out in the fields in the summer and fall, and being in such a supportive and exciting workplace 🙂

What’s your favorite season here in RI, and why? I’d have to say summer because I love being by the water and beach! Fall is a close second, I just wish it lasted longer in RI.

Thank you Shannon, we couldn’t do it without you!

Farm Fresh Rhode Island is an AmeriCorps grantee and receives funds as part of their State and National program, and to operate our VISTA program.
