The market is a vibrant community of shoppers, visitors, farmers, and food producers — as well as artists and retailers with permanent spaces in the Hope Artiste Village, where the market takes place. First-Time Vendors
Welcome to the Market!
This Saturday, January 13, we’re happy to welcome two brand new vendors to the market — Aleppo Sweets from Providence and Jaswell’s Farm from Smithfield!
Both of these new sellers are rotating, which means they’ll be at the market on & off during the season. (See schedule of rotating vendors for January/February 2018 below).
ALEPPO SWEETS — “Best Baklavah This Side of the Euphrates”
Youssef is a renowned baker from Aleppo, Syria. Baking has been in his family for generations: he owned several bakeries in Aleppo before the war. However, he was forced to flee Syria after his city and bakeries were destroyed during fighting. Youssef and his family were relocated to Rhode Island, where they hope to spread their gift for baking with the new country that has welcomed them. Because of Youssef’s talent, passion, and irresistible personality, the American community rallied around him. With the help of some friends, he established Aleppo Sweets to pursue his American Dream.
Visit Aleppo Sweets this Saturday for their debut at the Pawtucket Wintertime Farmers Market! Aleppo Sweets started out with a purely an e-commerce model. We are thrilled that they will be expanding their operations to include selling at the farmers market with us!
JASWELL’S FARM — “Where It’s All About Family, Yours… and Ours!”
Jaswell’s Farm is the oldest operating apple orchard in Smithfield, RI, and is currently run by the fourth generation of the Jaswell family. Started by Nicholas Jaswell (Nicola Gesualdi) in 1899, after he emigrated from Italy in the 1890s, the farm was passed down to his son Joe in the 1930s. Joe ran the farm with the help of his son Richard, who took over in 1967 with his wife Pat. This was the beginning of the Jaswell’s Farm we know and love today. Over the years, Richard and Pat have diversified their offerings, including adding a cider mill in 1970. And in 1998, they expanded again to add a pasteurizer for the apple cider and an onsite bakery. In 1999, Richard and Pat’s two children took over the business to continue the proud family tradition started by their great-grandfather 100 years earlier.
Jaswell’s Farm continues to grow and evolve with the ever-changing environment. The fourth generation is comprised of one of the few brother/sister teams in RI agriculture. Chris and Allison took over from their parents in 1999. Visit Jaswell’s at the farmers market this Saturday, and enjoy what the Jaswell family has worked so hard to build and sustain!
