RIDOH Supports Healthy Foods by Harvest Kitchen

September 19, 2018

September marks the culmination of a multi-year project we undertook with the Rhode Island Department of Health to offer more options for nutritious foods in low-income neighborhoods with limited access to fresh food in Pawtucket, Central Falls, and other Health Equity Zones across the state.

This funding has gone a long way toward helping us establish our Harvest Kitchen Café in downtown Pawtucket, which offers a full breakfast and lunch menu of locally sourced foods that support a healthy lifestyle and appeal to people with a wide variety of dietary needs.

As part of this project, the RI Department of Health worked with us to survey corner stores across Rhode Island to learn more about the barriers to offering fresh, nutritious items to communities that largely rely on corner stores for groceries due to factors such as the lack of reasonable access to fresh food stores.

Harvest Kitchen also piloted a “healthy retail” component during our initial café launch, and provided nutritious options for the Boys & Girls Club of Rhode Island concession stand to sell to families attending weeknight baseball games. Parents were thrilled to see some new, fresher options like our pasta salad packed with local, fresh produce and our house-made hummus served with locally grown carrots! We look forward to working with the Boys & Girls Club of RI again next summer — when together we will create and serve more healthy snacks for young baseball players and their families to enjoy.

The overall “healthy retail” pilot project was a great learning experience for all involved, identifying more clearly the needs of the community and the varying degrees of success achievable through a variety of different tactics.

We are thankful to the RI Department of Health for supporting Harvest Kitchen over the past several years. And we invite you to come visit our local foods café to see how delicious and affordable nutritious, locally sourced foods can be!
