RI Food Pantries Prepare to Meet Demand with Upcoming Changes to SNAP

January 30, 2020

Changes made by the USDA to the supplemental nutrition program known as SNAP (formerly “Food Stamps”) will end benefits to about 700,000 people across the nation including an estimated 7,300 people in Rhode Island, according to the Rhode Island Department of Human Services. The USDA says changes will take effect April 1st. NBC news reports these could increase  food insecurity for thousands of people ages 18-49 Responsibility to meet this increased need will fall on the shoulders of local nonprofits, like the  RI Community Food Bank and our network of pantries and meal sites in RI, who already serve an estimated 53,000 people per month.

Want to make sure our neighbors in need still have access to  fresh, healthy, fruits and veggies despite these policy changes? To learn more about how Hope’s Harvest RI fights food insecurity by providing thousands of pounds of produce to food pantries across RI, join us for our upcoming film screening and discussion at AS220 on Sat. February 29th, from 1-3:30pm.
