Meet Matt, Volunteer Extraordinaire!

October 17, 2019

As a nonprofit, our work would be impossible without the generosity and dedication of our amazing team of volunteers. Today we spotlight one of these hardworking folks: Matt!

Matt just celebrated his first full year volunteering with Farm Fresh RI on September 25th! He has been a very consistent packline volunteer, packing up dairy products from local farms in preparation for our Market Mobile team to make wholesale deliveries to local buyers — early in the morning every Tuesday and even earlier in the morning on super-busy Thursday delivery days. Matt has also helped our Community Access teams with outreach and tabling at community events.

Why do you volunteer with Farm Fresh Rhode Island?
To help support the local food system and meet new people.

Do you have a favorite memory from volunteering with Farm Fresh RI that you’d like to share?
Working with the whole packline team to get pallets full of delicious strawberries and blueberries out to the local restaurants during the summer!

How has volunteering with Farm Fresh RI impacted you?
It has taught me about all the different types of food that is produced and eaten by people all over the state. The packline is a unique opportunity to see where all of the food is produced along with the local restaurants that use this food.

What have you learned about yourself, others, or the local food system through volunteering with Farm Fresh Rhode Island?
I have learned that way more people participate in different aspects of the local food system than I realized. Working at Farm Fresh RI has also made me look for local food everywhere I go to shop and eat.

When you’re not volunteering, what do you like to do in your spare time?
Cooking, running, hiking and eating out!

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering with Farm Fresh RI?
Do it! Farm Fresh gives people the opportunity to connect with like-minded people who enjoy food!

What is your favorite local fruit or vegetable?
Strawberries!

Thank you, Matt, for your time volunteering with us!
— Jaime, Volunteer Coordinator and the whole Farm Fresh RI team
