As a nonprofit, our work would be impossible without the generosity and dedication of our amazing team of volunteers. Today we spotlight one of these hardworking folks: Deb!
Deb has been volunteering with the Veggie Box program since February, 2018, after wanting to volunteer for several years. In her 10 months so far volunteering with Farm Fresh RI, Deb has made a huge impact on our local food system. Deb has spent over 34 hours volunteering with the Veggie Box program and helped us pack over 3,650 boxes filled with a variety of local and seasonal produce and products from local farms.
Do you have a favorite memory from volunteering with Farm Fresh Rhode Island?
Every time I go, there’s something new and interesting, like learning about a vegetable that I’ve never heard of. Most recently, the volunteers were treated to some pie and apple cider from local organizations. It makes for great sharing and relationship building.
How has volunteering with Farm Fresh Rhode Island impacted you and/or your community?
It has for me. I’ve learned a lot about different vegetables, and the staff and other volunteers are always on hand to give recipe tips.
What have you learned about yourself, others, or the local food system through volunteering with Farm Fresh Rhode Island?
I’ve learned that I really do have a lot to offer in terms of volunteering. I’ve also learned about local food sources that I would have never otherwise known about.
When you’re not volunteering, what do you like to do in your spare time?
I love to read and cook mostly.
What would you tell someone who was thinking about volunteering with Farm Fresh Rhode Island?
Go for it — it’s a great learning experience!
What is your favorite local fruit or vegetable?
I would say green beans and carrots rise to the top of the list.
Thank you, Deb, for all of your dedicated volunteering!
