A Very Fruitful Summer Season

November 5, 2020

Fall in Rhode Island marks the beginning of red, orange, and yellow leaves exploding like fireworks on the trees. The air during the day turns crisp and cool, while the air at night is so chilly it requires a few extra layers of clothing to stay warm.

And for our Market Mobile local food service, the products we tend to see listed by local farmers and producers for sale take on a new trend. Out with the strawberries, watermelons, and blackberries. In with the pumpkins, potatoes, and squash.

But before we say goodbye to our Market Mobile shipments of summer products and say hello to our fall favorites, let’s look back at a very fruitful year. Yes, that pun was very much intended.

Elderberries came in with a respectable $934 in sales for local farmers through Market Mobile this year. An usual fruit for those who don’t frequent farmers markets, elderberries are a unique item that can be used as a syrup on ice cream and in sparkling water, after being boiled with sugar and water.

Our farmer partners’ peaches sold very well, with over $22,600 in sales this year. With so many delicious menu options from just a few peaches — peach pie, grilled peaches, peach coffee cake, and many others — it’s easy to see why New Englanders love them. Ordering on Market Mobile for home delivery or curbside pickup made it easy for our customers to enjoy these seasonal favorites this year.

And our two highest selling fruits of the year? Blueberries and Apples. Blueberries sold just over $34,000 this season while apples have brought in over $10,000 more, with over $45,000 in sales just by early fall — with many months to go for local apple purchasing. These figures are quite inspiring. Not only does it show a commitment to reducing global emissions caused by excessive food miles, but it shows a strong community between local farmers and eaters! We are so excited to watch this community grow and flourish well into the fall and winter season, despite a very challenging year.

For more information on what items are in season both on Market Mobile and at the Winter Farmers Market, check out the RI Local Harvest Calendar.
