Harvest Kitchen is our culinary job training program for youth ages 16–19 involved with Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) Juvenile Corrections and Child Welfare Services. Our trainees work to create value-added products and grab-n-go meals using ingredients sourced from local farms, and get hands-on retail experience selling their goods at farmers markets and working in our Café + Corner Store in downtown Pawtucket.
We frequently collaborate with other community organizations to “en-Rich” the curriculum.
This Tuesday, our morning session of trainees headed over to City Farm — a 1-acre farm in Providence run by Southside Community Land Trust. We got to meet with Rich Pederson, the City Farm Steward. After a tour and explanation of City Farm, our group went to work, getting plants ready for the Rare & Unusual Plant Sale — happening this Saturday and Sunday!
All of our trainees agreed that farming is hard work! But at the same time, they appreciated feeling relaxed in the beautiful gardens of City Farm. Much thanks to Rich, City Farm staff and volunteers for a a great day and the beautiful flowers!
