Our Nutrition Education team is in the midst of finishing up our after-school series (look out for more on our upcoming young-chef competition soon!). And our senior series will be ending its season shortly as well. Over 50 Rhode Island seniors have participated this session — having fun playing RI BINGO and jeopardy, and learning about our local food system, shopping for and preparing nutritious meals, and more.
Summer is almost upon us!
As the school year comes to a close, our attentions have also turned to planning an exceptional outdoor season of programming. For example…
- Beginning in June, our Farm to School team will be offering a Gardening program at the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket. Our knowledgable staff will bring young people on a sensory exploration of the garden and actively engage participants in hands-on learning and garden work! We’ll dig into the garden ecosystem and explore the different creatures who live there, taste different plant parts, and learn how to tend and maintain a garden. (Interested in hosting a garden program with us this summer or fall?)
- Then in July, we jump right into our Healthy Foods, Healthy Families program, which runs through August. This season, we’ll be getting back to the basics with simple recipes your kids will love, weekly incentives for participation, and overall fun for families at participating farmers markets — see where we’ll be this summer!
- We’ll also be making some appearances at camp programs in the area, cooking up the local summer harvest and trying new flavors with local youth.
- In July we’ll also be starting a six-week preschool program focused on learning about plant parts, and of course fresh, local, seasonal food samples!
We look forward to this time of year because it’s a great season to share the delicious harvest of our region! Nothing beats that first bite of a strawberry or tomato fresh from the fields of RI!
